Dentistry
Dogs and cats cannot clean their teeth like we can, and so plaque and tartar gradually begin to form. The reddening, swelling and infection of the gums is called gingivitis.
It's not just the smell that is the problem, the gums retract and cause pain and infection which will cause problems with eating, tooth decay, and if things get worse no teeth at all.
Unfortunately pets are not good at sitting patiently with their mouth open, that is why they need a general anaesthetic to have the job done properly. Our veternarian uses an ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus and plaque from the tooth surface, and teeth which are badly affected are removed. Your pet might need a short course of antibiotics to control infection.
An initial consultation at East Bentleigh Animal Care vet is required to assess your pet's general health, and provide you with an estimate for the dental procedure. Click here to find out why you should bother with a dental check for your pet.
