Why Come to Puppy Classes?

Did you know that one of the largest causes of death in puppies under one year of age is euthanasia due to behaviour problems?  This statistic makes one sit up and think!  Dogs are highly intelligent, active, social animals that need activity, company, and stimulation.  In welcoming a puppy into our lives we must be prepared to meet these needs.

Being a puppy is one of the most important stages in a dog's life.  It is this period between 4 to 18 weeks of age that the young puppy will learn quickly, so this is the vital age to start training & socialising the pup.  Everything that a puppy sees and experiences during this stage will have a great effect on how they behave as adults.  For example, puppies who are never exposed to children our loud noises may develop a fear of such things, translating to serious aggression or phobia problems later on.

In a friendly safe environment, we will introduce you to the training & socialisation of your puppy with other puppies and people.  Our classes are run by a fully qualified canine obedience trainer from Australian Dog Training.  She will teach good manners such as sit, recall & drop, and also intruct you how to deal with behavioural problems such as biting & jumping.  She will also cover all aspects of pet care from diet, grooming, dental, toilet training, and the basic understanding of normal canine behaviour.

Our puppy classes are held at the clinic on Tuesday evenings.  Over four weeks your trainer will cover a range of topics including:

• Diet & Nutrition
• House Training
• Dealing with Mouthing, Biting, Nipping & Chewing
• Work & Release Commands
• How to 'Sit' Your Dog
• Correct Way to Handle the Lead
• Social Walking
• Dealing with Destructive Behaviour (Jumping, Barking & Digging)
• How to 'Stand' Your Dog
• Vet Checks & Health

Numbers for the classes are limited, so please call us on 9579 5858 to book a place for your puppy ASAP, or for further information.

Good Manners

So you have just finished Puppy Classes, and are probably wondering what happens now?!  No doubt as your puppy gets older (and bigger), behavioural problems can become a real challenge for your family.

Puppy Classes were a great way to get your puppy properly socialised and to introduce you to the basics .... but now its time to enforce and continue training good behaviour for a well mannered dog!

Ongoing training and socialisation for your young dog beyond puppy school is vital.  Good Manners classes is the next step for those puppies that have completed Puppy Classes and require training in basic obedience & behaviour.

Good Manners classes are designed for puppies aged between 6 to 12 months of age.  At this age your puppy has a greater attention span to learn, and if proper training is enforced at this time, you are more likely to have better control over their behaviour for life.

Young dogs are constantly learning, challenging, and finding their place within their new pack (family).  Bad habits and unacceptable behaviour can easily develop during this time, if proper training techniques are not implemented quickly to correct the behaviour.  It is much easier to deal with bad behaviour as soon as it becomes a problem, and well before it becomes out of control.  Training is especially important during your puppy's transition into adulthood, to continue to reinforce training techniques and good manners for life.

Classes are fun and teach you how to manage your dog in everyday situations.  You will learn how to recognise and prevent or resolve behaviours that are disruptive in the household or are socially unacceptable.  You will also teach your dog 'good manners' and how to cope well in real life situations.  Also having fun, playing games, and socialisation enriches your dog's life and encourages confidence.  This course is for owners who want to enhance their training skills, increase their knowledge of dog behaviour, and manage their young dog as it matures.

Classes are held once a week on a Thursday night at 6:00pm.  Each class will run for approximately an hour, and all owners will be given the opportunity to discuss specific behavioural problems they are experiencing, and learn ways to correct this behaviour.  You are welcome to come once a month to as many classes as you like, or when ever you feel you a having a problem with your puppy's behaviour.
